鈥淚 was attracted to the applied math and computer science program because of how unique it is and how it applies my love of math to the real world,鈥 Julia said. 鈥淚鈥檓 especially passionate about studying and researching math and Stout has given me the opportunity to explore that in profound and applied ways. At the same time, the art and design programs are incredibly strong. Being able to study both math and interactive media has allowed me to fully pursue my passions and professional goals.鈥

Julia has actively pursued opportunities that reflect 91制片 Polytechnic鈥檚 commitment to applied learning and academic innovation and success. From participating in the School of Art and Design鈥檚 Fashion Without Fabric and the Fine Arts First-year Experience to working as a campus graphic designer, she has built a strong interdisciplinary skillset. These hands-on experiences helped her secure her first internship, an accomplishment she attributes to the range of opportunities available within the #StoutProud community.
One of Julia鈥檚 proudest moments came when she presented her research on mathematical methods for designing and analyzing error-correcting codes, particularly Linear Complementary Dual (LCD) codes in Niederreiter-Rosenbloom-Tsfasman (NRT) metric space (NRT-LCD codes) research at the Mathematical Association of America conference, an opportunity that allowed her to share original, interdisciplinary work with a national audience of mathematicians and demonstrate the real-world impact of her studies. The analytical techniques she developed through this work have broader applications in areas such as QR codes, cryptography and text messaging, where encoding, decoding and accurately predicting data behavior are essential. demonstrating how UW鈥慡tout Polytechnic fuels academic innovation and prepares students to make real-world contributions.
Her passion for the arts and research continues through her work with Predictive Interdisciplinary Glaze Modeling and Experimentation project, where she is exploring how mathematical modeling and data analysis can be used to predict ceramic glaze color based on complex chemical compositions and firing conditions, an inherently multivariable problem that requires identifying patterns, testing hypotheses and refining predictive systems.
Beyond the classroom and laboratory, Julia is actively engaged in a vibrant campus life that further fosters her interdisciplinary connections and creativity. As a leader in the Stout student STEAM Club she helps build a community where members explore the intersection of science, technology, engineering, art and math. Her involvement reflects a commitment not only to her own growth but also to support and inspire others.
