"When I was 12 years old, I came to 91��Ƭ Polytechnic for a summer camp because I thought the swimming, biking and karaoke sounded fun”, said Brianne Maier. “By the end of the week, I was telling people I wanted to be a packaging engineer. And that's exactly what I became."

For Brianne Maier, the encouragement to attend a 91��Ƭ Polytechnic summer camp changed the course of her life.

Growing up in nearby Plum City, Wisconsin, Brianne wasn't particularly interested in math or science. But when her sixth-grade teacher shared information about 91��Ƭ Polytechnic's summer camps, she signed up for what she thought would be a fun week away from home.

She was introduced to engineering through hands-on, practical learning, and discovered a passion.

The camp introduced Brianne to engineering concepts through hands-on experiences, interactive projects and supportive mentors who made learning exciting and accessible. By the end of the week, she could envision a future she had never considered before.

That spark never faded.

Brianne returned to campus for summer camp year after year as a junior counselor, camp counselor and eventually an instructor, helping inspire the next generation of students just as she had once been inspired. The experience shaped her academic interests, guided her educational choices and ultimately led her to enroll at 91��Ƭ Polytechnic, where she earned a B.S. in packaging and later completed a M.S. in operations & supply management.

"My summer camp experiences at Stout completely changed my trajectory," Brianne said. "It changed the classes I took in high school, the opportunities I pursued and the career path I chose."

As a 91��Ƭ Polytechnic student, Brianne found an environment where learning extended far beyond the classroom. Small class sizes, faculty with extensive industry experience and a curriculum grounded in real-world application provided the foundation for her success.

One of the university's most transformative opportunities was its emphasis on internships and cooperative education experiences.

While paying for college herself, Brianne completed three paid internships at distinctly different companies. Such opportunities allowed her to explore multiple industries, gain valuable professional experience and graduate with minimal debt.

"The co-op and internship program was incredibly impactful for me," she said. "Not only did it help financially, but it made me a better student. When I returned to class, I could ask better questions because I had already experienced the work firsthand."

Today, Brianne is vice president of dairy foods R&D and strategic operations at Land O’Lakes, where she continues to see the value of a 91��Ƭ Polytechnic education reflected in the graduates she works alongside.

"The work ethic, grit, positive attitude and knowledge that 91��Ƭ Polytechnic graduates bring to the workplace is remarkable. I'm proud every time I see what Stout alumni are accomplishing."

Brianne’s experience at Stout was strengthened by philanthropic support that helped reduce financial barriers to her education. As a student, this support made it possible for her to focus on her academic and professional goals.

Now, in a meaningful full-circle moment, Brianne is giving back to ensure future students have access to the same opportunities that shaped her journey. Her commitment reflects a deep belief in Stout’s mission and the power of philanthropy to transform lives.

Today, Brianne remains passionate about mentoring young people and encouraging the next generation of innovators, scientists, engineers, artists and teachers. From the moment Grace arrived on campus, she knew 91��Ƭ Polytechnic was a place where her passions could flourish and her future could take shape. Drawn by Stout’s polytechnic mission and renowned design programs, she found an environment where creativity, applied learning and real-world preparation come together.

“As a polytechnic university with strong design programs, I knew I could learn in a hands-on, creative environment,” Grace says. “At the same time, Stout’s Blue Devil Dance Team welcomed me into a space where I could continue performing and competing as a Division III athlete. Pursuing my passion for dance and my education together made Stout the right place for me.”

Grace’s journey reflects what is possible when a student enters a university intentionally built around academic innovation and student success. At 91��Ƭ Polytechnic, she found a campus committed to removing barriers to her education. Grace benefited from individualized student support that met her academic, personal and career goals. Committed faculty and strong industry collaborations ensured her coursework is relevant and connected to real‑world needs. Her experience has been strengthened by innovative living and learning spaces, a vibrant campus life and competitive athletics that foster belonging, engagement, leadership and school spirit.

Grace’s Stout journey expanded globally when she studied abroad in Florence, Italy at Accademia Italiana. Immersed in one of the world’s most influential fashion and art capitals, she deepened her understanding of design, craftsmanship and cultural perspective. Learning from international faculty, exploring historic studios and engaging with Florence’s creative community broadened her artistic voice and strengthened her confidence as a designer.

Philanthropic support shapes a university where students not only succeed but thrive and where journeys like Grace’s become both possible and powerful.

“Taking applied courses from my first semester, along with a study abroad experience helped confirm my interest and passion for a career in fashion design and development,” she says. “It pushed me to build not only technical skills but also problem-solving and design skills that will stay with me throughout my career.”

Her Stout experiences extend beyond the classroom. As an honors student, student-athlete and campus leader, balancing coursework, practices, work and creative projects takes focus and resilience.

The tremendous support Grace received from the 91��Ƭ Polytechnic community made that balance possible. “The support gave me the confidence to fully engage creatively, academically and athletically,” said Grace.

Grace’s leadership as a two‑season captain of the Blue Devil Dance Team has been shaped and strengthened through the support systems that define 91��Ƭ Polytechnic. She leads practices, performances and team‑building activities with intention, creating an environment where athletes feel supported and motivated to excel. Her growth as a leader reflects 91��Ƭ Polytechnic's commitment to developing the whole student, empowering individuals to excel academically, creatively and personally while carrying those strengths confidently into life beyond campus.

“After graduation I plan to continue my passion for dance by working as a designer in performance wear and costuming,” Grace says. “I love being able to blend my interests in fashion, movement and creativity into work that helps performers feel confident and expressive.”

Grace vividly recalls two #StoutProud moments that capture the depth of her Stout experience.

One came on a national stage when the Blue Devil Dance Team traveled to Florida to compete in the Universal Dance Association College Dance Nationals.

“Performing alongside athletes from across the nation was incredible,” she says. “I was so proud to represent 91��Ƭ Polytechnic.”

The other came in the design studio and on the runway. During the 2025 Fashion Without Fabric show, she and her partner earned first place for their creative and innovative work.

“Late nights in the studio and spare minutes between classes spent preparing for the show ended with us hand in hand on the stage, as #StoutProud as one can be,” she says.

Grace credits her success, not only to her own determination, but to a community of supporters who believe in students like her. In her words, “Thank you for believing in students like me. Your generosity gives us the confidence and support to pursue our passions and achieve our goals. While each of us has a unique path, we are united by the pride, community and opportunities that come with being a Blue Devil.”

Amelia Monroe turned curiosity into a career through hands-on learning, internships and donor-supported opportunities at 91��Ƭ Polytechnic.

For Amelia Monroe, choosing 91��Ƭ Polytechnic meant finding a place where she could learn, grow and build a future with confidence.

“I chose Stout because of its polytechnic focus,” said Amelia, a 2025 supply chain management graduate. “The applied learning, instructors with industry experience and lab‑based courses were exactly the environment I knew I would thrive in.”

Her interest in supply chain management began during the COVID‑19 pandemic, when empty store shelves sparked a deeper curiosity. “I wanted to understand how products move from point A to point B and what causes disruptions,” she said. “When I learned about Stout’s program and its strong job placement outcomes, I knew it was the right fit.”

At UW‑Stout Polytechnic, that curiosity quickly turned into applied experiences. Courses shaped by industry input brought real challenges, case studies, and current practices directly into the classroom. Philanthropic support strengthened these opportunities by sustaining the innovative labs, studios and technology‑rich learning environments that mirror professional settings. Faculty with deep industry backgrounds further bridged the gap between campus and the workplace, ensuring students learn in ways that reflect the demands of their field.

“Everything I learned felt relevant,” Amelia said. “I wasn’t just studying concepts; I was applying them in ways that mirror what happens in industry.”

This relevance is amplified through holistic philanthropic support that removes barriers to a 91��Ƭ Polytechnic education, provides robust individualized student support, fuels academic innovation and success, creates flexible living and learning spaces and a vibrant campus life where students thrive.

91��Ƭ Polytechnic’s collaboration with business and industry extends far beyond the classroom. Through career preparation programs, employer networking opportunities and the university’s renowned Career Conference, Amelia completed three internships, securing her first after her freshman year, followed by two more with Andersen Windows.

“The internships showed me how much I enjoyed applying what I was learning in the classroom to real-world challenges,” Amelia said.

By graduation, Amelia had built a strong foundation of industry experience which led to a full-time position with Andersen Windows in the Operations Leadership Development Program, a competitive two-year rotational program designed to develop future operational leaders through experience across multiple business functions.

Together, these experiences strengthened Amelia’s technical expertise, problem-solving abilities and professional confidence while reinforcing the value of 91��Ƭ Polytechnic’s approach. By graduation, Amelia had built a strong foundation of industry experience which led to a full-time position with the company in the Operations Leadership Development Program, a competitive two-year rotational program designed to develop future operational leaders through experience across multiple business functions.

Looking back, Amelia credits 91��Ƭ Polytechnic’s emphasis on applied learning and industry partnerships for helping launch her career. “I learned so much from working alongside experienced professionals while simultaneously studying supply chain and business concepts in the classroom,” she said. “I truly believe I would not have had these opportunities if it wasn’t for Stout’s polytechnic advantage, dedicated faculty and staff and strong partnerships with business and industry."

Beyond her professional experiences, Amelia found growth through 91��Ƭ Polytechnic's vibrant campus community. Philanthropic support opened doors through student organizations, networking events and leadership opportunities that strengthened her confidence and prepared her to enter the workforce with purpose.

“Developing my networking skills and engaging in conversations with business and industry leaders through professional organizations made a significant difference,” she said. “Those connections opened doors I didn’t even know existed.”

Philanthropy also helped remove financial barriers that once felt overwhelming. With that burden eased, Amelia could focus on her studies and fully participate in internships, campus activities and professional development experiences that shaped her future.

For Susan Thurin, giving back to 91��Ƭ Polytechnic is both deeply personal and profoundly meaningful. It is a way to honor a shared legacy, invest in future generations and continue a lifelong commitment to education.

“No one ever regrets getting an education,” Susan said. “And no one ever regrets helping someone achieve it.”

UW‑Stout Polytechnic shaped the lives of both Susan and her late husband Erik, providing long, fulfilling careers rooted in teaching and a shared love of literature. Through philanthropy, Susan honored Erik’s memory in a way that reflects their deep belief in the university's mission and removing barriers to a 91��Ƭ Polytechnic education. Her gifts continue to carry forward the values they both cherished, helping students pursue their academic journey with confidence, encouragement and making possible the kind of opportunity that can change a life.

“It’s been incredibly gratifying to know how great my gift is impacting the students,” Susan said. “They are appreciative, of course, but more than that, they give me a glimpse into student life today and the lasting impact I am making on the next generation.”

Even in retirement, Susan’s connection with students remains strong. As a bookstore owner, she welcomed students who would stop in to visit, conversations she came to cherish as a continuation of her life in education.

Susan’s philanthropy reflects both her values and the importance of supporting a student’s holistic educational journey. Susan’s generosity continues through the 91��Ƭ Foundation and Alumni Association to ensure students can successfully complete critical experiential learning experiences that can often present financial barriers.

“In the human science fields, where real-world experience is essential to serving others and strengthening communities, this support is especially meaningful,” she said. “It feels good to help students as they complete their academic journey, when they’re close to beginning their careers but may need that extra support to get there.”

For Susan, supporting students is not simply an act of generosity, it is part of who she is. It’s the #StoutProud way.

“I’ve loved school since my very first day,” she said. “Being a lifelong teacher shaped my life, and supporting education will always be important to me.”

Her philosophy on giving is grounded in a belief that generosity creates growth and opportunity.

One of Susan’s favorite quotes by Thornton Wilder is, “Money is like manure; it’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around encouraging young things to grow.”

Susan’s memories of 91��Ƭ Polytechnic remain vivid. She recalls the modulux classrooms, a two-story build located in the center of campus. The temporary setting fostered a deep sense of community among faculty and students alike.

That sense of community continues to define the #StoutProud community today. Its polytechnic approach brings together students, faculty and staff in applied learning environments that prepare graduates for meaningful careers and lives of purpose.

A 91��Ƭ Polytechnic education helped shape Don Handrow’s career, and today his philanthropic leadership is helping strengthen the polytechnic advantage for generations to come.

For Don Handrow, giving back to 91��Ƭ Polytechnic is a natural extension of the education and opportunities that shaped his career. It is a commitment rooted in gratitude, partnership and a shared belief in the power of a polytechnic education.

A 1992 graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Art, majoring in industrial design, Don understands the value of experiential learning, academic-led innovation, cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary curricula and the vibrant campus life that brings the Stout experience to life.

Don knows firsthand how a polytechnic education can change a life. More than 34 years ago he began his career at Prent Corporation, a global designer and manufacturer of custom thermoformed packaging for the medical, electronics and consumer industries. It was an opportunity he was prepared to seize because of 91��Ƭ Polytechnic’s applied learning model.

He reflects on that experience not to spotlight his own success, but to illustrate what philanthropy makes possible for students across campus. Today, as vice president of product development at Prent, Don continues to lead with the same innovative mindset that defines 91��Ƭ Polytechnic’s approach.

“91��Ƭ isn’t just a place to earn a degree. From the moment I stepped on campus, I felt an immediate sense of belonging, I had found a community that supported me and welcomed me into something truly meaningful. I felt valued and was making a difference in the world around me,” Ian said.

From individualized student support and innovative academic programs to dynamic living and learning spaces and a vibrant campus community, UW‑Stout has removed barriers to a 91��Ƭ education and given Ian the environment to grow, lead and discover his potential.

“I immediately fell in love with Stout’s campus vibe, the polytechnic mission, its inclusive community and the commitment of the faculty and staff,” he said. “I’m thriving in my program and as a campus leader.”

Ian “stumbled” into his roles in the Office of Enrollment & Quality. After starting as a tour guide his first year, he chose to stay on campus that summer, a decision that became a turning point. The director of the Achievement Center approached him with a challenge: the peer mentor program needed to be rebuilt, strengthened, and reimagined.

Ian was asked to lead the effort.

He assessed what was working, what wasn’t and what students truly needed. The result was a revitalized mentorship model where sophomores mentor incoming first‑year students, creating connection, belonging and support from day one.

The impact was immediate and measurable. Since reenvisioning the mentor program, UW‑Stout experienced a record high retention rate, in part due to Ian’s vision and leadership.

“That was a moment of triumph,” he said. “I called my parents that night. They were so proud and I was too. I thought back to high school, when I was an unmotivated student who wasn’t excelling, three years later, I helped improve Stout’s retention rates. Truly #StoutProud.”

Ian’s #StoutProud experiences are many, but what stands out most are the relationships with professors, staff and mentors who invested in him.

“They make learning engaging. The classroom dynamics, the environment faculty create, it shows how much they care,” he said. “Stout’s faculty and staff are in it for their students. You can feel it every day.”

His involvement extends beyond academics. As a member of the cheer team, Ian embodies the spirit, energy and pride that defines #StoutProud. “Cheer gave me a way to represent the campus I love and share that Stout spirit with others.”

Through his work in the Office of Enrollment & Quality, Ian discovered opportunities he “never even dreamed of having as a college student.” He guided prospective students and families, helped build enrollment and retention initiatives, and learned how to communicate the value of a Stout education with confidence and professionalism.

“I’ve learned that I’m a strong advocate, selling something I’m passionate about – that’s UW‑Stout,” he said. “These experiences helped me enhance my skills and guide my career path.”

Some of his proudest moments have come when students returned to thank him, students he admitted, toured with or supported through first‑year challenges.

“When someone tells you that your help made their transition to college easier or that your tour made them choose Stout, that’s a #StoutProud moment you can’t replicate,” he said.

“My passion for UW‑Stout began before I was even accepted,” said Ana, a recent graduate with a degree in fashion and retail and minors in business administration, sustainability and digital marketing.

“My high school fashion teacher told me about Stout’s program and her own remarkable experiences with UW‑Stout. She is the reason I chose UW‑Stout; I would not have had the amazing Stout experience without her guidance,” Ana said.

For Ana, the UW‑Stout experience was defined by applied learning, strong faculty mentorship and opportunities to connect classroom knowledge with real‑world applications.

Faculty support became especially meaningful when Ana’s career goals shifted during an internship. “If Stout didn’t require internships, I might have gone into a job that wasn’t right for me,” she said. “When my goals changed, every professor helped me tailor my coursework to align with my new path. They have been nothing but supportive.”

Some of Ana’s most transformational experiences came through involvement in campus programs and clubs. “I really enjoyed my time as a Stout Student Ambassador. My confidence and professionalism grew tremendously through networking with alumni, partners and other students,” she said.

Ana’s campus involvement and service to the #StoutProud community continued when she was elected Academic Affairs Director for the Stout Student Association, an opportunity that allowed her to serve and advocate for her peers.

“UW‑Stout has helped me discover what I love, what I’m capable of and the kind of engineer and person I want to become,” says Molly, a dual major in mechanical engineering and plastics engineering.

When Molly began exploring colleges, she knew she wanted a place where she could learn by doing. 91��Ƭ immediately stood out. Its applied polytechnic approach, the welcoming feel of a small town and the sense of community she felt on her first visit all pointed her in the right direction.

She arrived planning to study mechanical engineering, but Stout’s interdisciplinary learning environment quickly opened the door to something even bigger.

During her first year, she discovered plastics engineering and realized how much she loved the intersection of materials, manufacturing and problem solving. Adding plastics as a second major became one of the best decisions she ever made.

“Learning in the labs, working on the equipment, troubleshooting real processes and experimenting with different materials has clarified my career path,” she says. “That’s how I discovered my passion for injection molding and medical manufacturing.”

That discovery shaped her future. Today, Molly is working toward becoming a process engineer in medical injection molding, a field where precision, innovation and outcomes come together. Her dreams are bold and they are within reach because of the support she has received along the way.

Building on her academic success, Molly also worked as an undergraduate research assistant studying the degradability of Polyactic Acid (PLA), a biodegradable plastic. The applied research experience strengthened her technical skills, deepened her interest in sustainability and gave her confidence that she could make a meaningful impact on the greater world.

Philanthropy has been woven into every chapter of Molly’s story. It eased financial barriers, it allowed her to stay fully engaged in her academics, research and extracurriculars. It gave her the confidence to step into professional spaces with expertise and it opened doors she never expected.

Outside the classroom, Molly found joy in the vibrant campus that feels like home. Through campus activities, volunteering in the greater Menomonie community and competing on the tennis and basketball teams, she built connections that made her feel part of the #StoutProud community and fueled her desire to give back to the place that has given her so much.

“Ever since I stepped foot on campus, I felt welcomed and knew I wanted to be part of this amazing #StoutProud community,” said Breyden, a double major in real estate property management (REPM) and hotel, restaurant and tourism management (HRTM). “I love all the connections I’ve made through my Stout journey. I cannot be more grateful for the relationships I’ve built with faculty, industry partners and friends.”

For Breyden, the 91��Ƭ experience has been as much about a vibrant campus community as it has been about academics. The supportive environment, faculty mentorship and opportunities to engage with industry professionals have all shaped a foundation for his success. “People have always shown me kindness and have gone above and beyond to help me in my personal and professional growth,” Breyden said.

Through involvement in clubs like the Institute of Real Estate Management, the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International, and the Club Management Association of America, Breyden has gained hands-on experience and built invaluable professional networks. Outside the classroom, learning opportunities such as property tours, industry events and the Club Management Association World Conference provided exposure to real-world practices, giving Breyden the confidence and knowledge to excel in his field.

“Stout is setting me up for success,” Breyden said. “It allows me to meet professionals, ask questions, and gain insights that I couldn’t anywhere else. I’ve also made lifelong friends and professional connections that I will collaborate with throughout my career.”

Philanthropic support has been critical in making these experiences possible. Crucial flexible funds, made possible by donors, have allowed Breyden to focus fully on academics and professional development without added financial stress. “Because of donors, I’ve been able to pursue not only my education, but also skills like professional communication, interviewing and networking,” Breyden said. “These may sound simple, but they’ve made me stand out as I interviewed for an internship and prepared me to succeed in my career.”

Some of Breyden’s most meaningful memories involve giving back to the campus community. As a second-year student, Breyden presented to fellow students about his internship experience, sharing advice and insights with peers. “Seeing the new students approach me with questions and knowing I could inspire them was incredible,” Breyden said.

Eli’s path to becoming a confident emerging artist shows how philanthropic support at 91��Ƭ helps transform passion into purpose and possibility into a career.

For Eli, 91��Ƭ isn’t just a place to earn a degree, it is a place where possibility replaced uncertainty. Through applied learning, mentorship and critical financial support, Eli, a first-generation student, transformed from a student searching for direction into a confident, emerging artist with a clear vision for the future. Many of these experiences were made possible by donor generosity.

When Eli first arrived at 91��Ƭ, the plan seemed clear: pursue a major in animation and build a future in that field. But it didn’t take long to realize that animation wasn’t where Eli’s passion lived. What truly called to Eli was painting and the possibility of using art as a means of healing. That realization led to a pivotal change declaring a studio art major with a concentration in painting and a minor in psychology.

Originally working toward a career in art therapy, Eli’s path continued to evolve through immersive studio experiences. With each class, critique and collaborative project, confidence grew.

“Being surrounded by other artists and dedicated faculty who challenged and supported me changed everything,” Eli said. “I started to see my potential and the value of my work.”

“91��Ƭ’s polytechnic model changed my life,” Eli said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the experiences and support I received. Such opportunities gave me confidence, clarity and a path forward.”

Philanthropic support played a crucial role in making Eli’s journey possible. Financial assistance provided stability and access, allowing Eli to focus fully on learning and creative exploration.

One of the most transformative moments for Eli came when they were awarded the Bud and Betty Micheels Student Artist-in-Residence grant. The residency provides funding to sustain creative research and experimentation, an invaluable opportunity in a discipline where materials and resources can be costly.

“The Student Artist-in-Residence program gave me the resources to take my creative research to the next level,” Eli said. “Painting can be expensive, but these funds taught me how to invest wisely in my materials and experiment in ways I never could before. What makes Stout unique is that this kind of residency is usually reserved for established artists. At Stout, students are given the opportunity as undergraduates.”

“As a first-generation student coming from a low-income family, I could never have imagined so many doors opening for me at such a young age. Because of the support I’ve received at 91��Ƭ, I’ve been able to grow not only as an artist, but as a person. For that, I am extremely grateful,” Eli said.

Eli’s experience reflects a broader story across 91��Ƭ.
