Polytechnic partnership empowers alum's company update in preparation for expansion

91��Ƭ’s polytechnic approach gave industrial and product design alum Trevor James the skills to create his own business and carve out a niche in large-scale graphic installations. It’s also what prompted him to connect with his alma mater when he wanted to rebrand and expand that business.

Now, with the help of recent graphic design and interactive media graduate Opal Lawrence, James’ Minnesota-based business, Amplify Graphic Installations, has undergone a relaunch.

James, a 2002 graduate, said his 91��Ƭ industrial and product design education helped him create a career in the graphics installation industry, first working for several companies while developing a broad skillset that reflected his experience at 91��Ƭ.

“91��Ƭ has a polytechnic, hands-on way of doing things, which I’ve always just loved,” he said. “When anybody says, ‘Hey can you do this?,’ I say, ‘I’ll be able to figure it out.’”

In 2013, James started his own business, originally called Artistinu, which now includes his wife, Kristin, and another employee. Originally focused on installing vehicle wraps, the business has grown and evolved, with 80% of their work now involves brick-and-mortar installations. They use a variety of applications – including vinyl, acrylic, 3D letters, banners, wayfinding, silicon edge graphics (SEG) frames, and more – and mainly do installations for commercial businesses in Minnesota and beyond, including high-profile clients such as Wells Fargo, Target and US Bank Stadium. One client thought highly enough of the team that they flew them to New York to install graphics in Times Square.

Recently, James decided to rebrand the business as Amplify Graphic Installations, which is both more descriptive of what the company does and more easily spelled than Aristinu. It’s all part of an effort to expand, he explained, which will allow him to spend more time on operations and growth and less time on installation.

However, other than hiring someone to design a new logo a few years ago, the couple didn’t make headway on the project. Ultimately, Kristin wondered, “How can we economically work with somebody to help us do a full rebrand?”

The answer came when they reached out to 91��Ƭ.

Engaging with businesses of all sizes

The inquiry reached 91��Ƭ’s Office of Corporate Relations and Economic Engagement, which supports the university’s polytechnic mission by catalyzing applied learning to help businesses, nonprofits, government agencies and community organizations.

External Partner Outreach Manager Sarah Sippl coordinated a meeting between the couple and Associated Dean Aaron Durst, director of 91��Ƭ’s School of Art & Design, and Assistant Professor Katie Lupton, program director for the B.F.A. graphic design and interactive media program. Lupton identified Lawrence, a former student, as the perfect candidate to complete the work.

“She’s going to get it done, she’s a great designer, she’s super reliable,” Lupton recalled saying. “This is going to be a home run.”

The partners created and signed a scope-of-work agreement, and Lawrence was brought on as a limited-term employee to help Amplify Graphic Installations upgrade its brand. It needed new print materials, such as business cards and brochures. But it also needed a refreshed website, redesigned to highlight the business’s new name and branding and to emphasize its accreditation as a 3M Preferred Graphics Installer, which indicates workers have passed advanced tests and specialize in installing specialized graphics such as those on walls, windows and fleets of vehicles. In addition, the business needed its social media channels – including LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook – to match the new look.

Perfecting her portfolio, bringing thoughtfulness to design

Lawrence said she was pleased that Lupton, who she had as a professor for several classes, including her senior capstone course, thought of her for the opportunity. She talked with Trevor and Kristin and got to know them, their business and what they wanted to do with it. The team soon established weekly check-ins to discuss the project’s progress.

“They already had a logo, but they needed everything else to have that new identity,” explained Lawrence, who graduated in December with a B.F.A. in graphic design and interactive media. Because of her coursework and professional experience – including a current internship with Forma, a Menomonie-based multidisciplinary design company – Lawrence had the know-how to create printed materials as well as the technical skills to reboot the company’s online presence.

“This is not a weeklong, ‘cram it in and get it done’ process,” Trevor explained. “Opal does a lot of different things, and then we talk about them, she makes whatever changes are needed, and we move on to the next thing.”

Business relaunches with new look

“It’s been very good, everybody’s been on the top of their game – very professional,” Trevor added. Lawrence has helped not only with adopting the logo, colors and branding but also with important behind-the-scenes details such as changing email addresses.

The experience has helped Lawrence apply and polish a wide range of skills. “It’s been cool being able to handle and manage the communication side of things,” she said. “I’m doing the work, but I’m also setting up the meetings and confirming with them what they’re looking for. It’s been interesting to have that very rounded experience – doing it all.”

Now, after several months of work, Amplify Graphic Installations has relaunched with its new name and new look.

“Working with Opal and learning about things that they can do with their design process and the business has been really great for Trevor and Kristin,” Lupton said. “I feel like it’s been a positive experience and a great first example of projects for the future."

“There definitely could be more relationships and partnerships like this,” she continued, adding that businesses may not realize they can form such beneficial connections with 91��Ƭ.

Manufacturing Outreach Center receives federal designation as statewide leader to support small and medium-sized manufacturers

91��Ƭ, Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University, has been awarded $19 million in federal funds as it takes a leadership role as manager of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) program in Wisconsin. The funds, $3.8 million annually for five years, come through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology MEP National Network. The program’s primary mission is to strengthen and empower small and mid-sized U.S. manufacturers through state-designated MEP Centers across the United States. 

This funding will enable 91��Ƭ’s Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC), its subrecipient the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership (WMEP), and statewide manufacturing leaders to coordinate efforts that ensure continued, uninterrupted support for Wisconsin’s small and mid-sized manufacturers. 

For the past decade, MOC and WMEP have received funding through the Wisconsin Center for Manufacturing and Productivity (WCMP). With WCMP’s Board of Directors voting to dissolve the organization at the end of 2025 to streamline operations, 91��Ƭ — through the MOC — stepped forward to secure future funding and maintain continuity of services across the state. 

“Through MOC’s leadership and the combined statewide field staff of both organizations, manufacturers will continue to access tailored support in areas such as lean process improvement, quality management systems, supply chain optimization, leadership development, and advanced technology adoption, including AI,” 91��Ƭ Chancellor Katherine Frank said.

Under the new structure, MOC serves as the primary applicant and coordinating entity, with Madison-based WMEP as a subrecipient and key partner in delivering statewide services. Together, the organizations continue a 30-year impact record: creating or retaining more than 34,000 jobs, generating $8.9 billion in economic impact, and serving more than 575 manufacturers annually. 

“Through this new structure the MOC and its partner, the WMEP, will be able to better connect small and medium-sized manufacturers to statewide resources, including 91��Ƭ’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing & AI,” said Seth Hudson, executive director of Corporate Relations and Economic Engagement at 91��Ƭ. 

Manufacturing remains a cornerstone of Wisconsin’s economy, contributing $71.6 billion to the state’s $402 billion gross domestic product and employing about 15% of the workforce, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. 

“Together, MOC and WMEP have delivered measurable results for Wisconsin manufacturing,” said Chris Baichoo, CEO and executive director of WMEP. “This alliance ensures coordinated, statewide support to help small and mid-sized manufacturers strengthen operations, develop their workforce and remain competitive.” 

By equipping manufacturers with practical tools, strategic guidance, and specialized expertise, MOC and WMEP are positioning Wisconsin’s manufacturing sector for long-term strength and competitiveness.

Three of Wisconsin’s leading manufacturing support organizations announced today a groundbreaking partnership to help mid-market manufacturers strategically adopt artificial intelligence and advanced technologies. The collaboration between MKE Tech Hub Coalition’s Synapse initiative, Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership (WMEP), and the Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC) and Center for Advanced Manufacturing & AI (CAM-AI), both housed at 91��Ƭ, Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University, creates the state’s most comprehensive AI transformation support network for manufacturers.

The partnership addresses a critical gap in Wisconsin’s manufacturing ecosystem, where mid-market manufacturers face mounting pressure to modernize using AI solutions but lack access to strategic guidance tailored to their specific needs and resources. With 25% of Wisconsin’s manufacturing workforce approaching retirement, these companies need productivity solutions that enable them to do more with fewer people while attracting next-generation talent.

MKE Tech Hub Coalition is a nonprofit membership organization serving as a unifying voice for Milwaukee’s tech ecosystem and a catalyst for innovation through meaningful connections. Through its Synapse initiative, MKE Tech Hub provides AI strategy and transformation leadership for mid-market manufacturers across Wisconsin.

The partnership specifically caters to the more than 99% of Wisconsin manufacturers operating below $500 million in revenue — companies often overlooked by tier-1 consulting firms requiring more than $1 million engagements. By leveraging MKE Tech Hub's tax-exempt status and the partnership's collaborative model, the initiative delivers enterprise-grade consulting expertise at mid-market accessible pricing.

Unlike traditional consulting firms that compete for implementation work, MKE Tech Hub’s Synapse initiative operates as a “network orchestrator” — developing strategic methodologies and coordinating delivery through verified partners without competing on implementation. This approach ensures manufacturers receive vendor-neutral guidance focused solely on business value.

New program will build certificate courses in areas such as manufacturing, cybersecurity to train hundreds of workers in the next four years

91��Ƭ will work closely with Wisconsin businesses to ensure a recently announced $2 million federal grant will provide hundreds of workers with the skills needed to fill the state’s most in-demand jobs.

Over the next four years, 91��Ƭ FUSE (Fast Upskilling for Skills and Employment) will give adult learners, displaced and underemployed workers, and other students the skills needed to succeed through six new short-term programs serving high-demand sectors aligned with Wisconsin’s Hot Jobs, which may include health care and behavioral support, manufacturing and logistics, IT support and cybersecurity, meeting and event planning, and child care.

91��Ƭ is the only institution in Wisconsin and one of only a handful of four-year universities nationwide among the 22 recipients of a U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) Special Project Program grant to create high-quality, short-term programs.

The FIPSE grant to 91��Ƭ is in the amount of $2,031,578, and 100% of the federal funds will be used by the FUSE project with no additional funds financed by nongovernmental sources.

91��Ƭ is now building the new certificate programs in cooperation with business and industry partners as well as the West Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board, said Executive Director of Educational Pathways and Outreach Beth Hein.

“FUSE is built on listening first — to employers, to industry leaders and to our regional partners,” Hein said. “When business and education work side by side, we create programs that don’t just prepare students for jobs, but for long-term careers. Our ongoing connection with industry keeps our training relevant, responsive and impactful.”

FUSE will fill training gap

Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota are experiencing sustained and intensifying workforce shortages across multiple critical industries, most notably those targeted by the FUSE program. Employers throughout the region consistently report difficulty filling both entry-level and mid-skill roles, even as job postings persist at historically high levels and unemployment sits near record lows.

However, current short-term employment education programs are fragmented and uneven, tending to focus on very short basic workshops and bootcamps or traditional semester-long courses. 91��Ƭ’s FUSE program will fill the gap between these options.

As Wisconsin’s only Polytechnic University, 91��Ƭ is uniquely poised to contribute to the development of short-term credentials to meet the employment needs of Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota. 91��Ƭ has a strong history of applied learning and research, business and industry collaborations, and career-focused education.

The FIPSE grant received by 91��Ƭ in January will build the capacity of employer-aligned programs that last from eight to 15 weeks and culminate in industry-recognized skills and credentials. The programs will also be Workforce Pell eligible, allowing students with financial needs to access them through the newly established Workforce Pell Grant Program, which goes into effect on July 1.

Programs will launch by end of 2026

91��Ƭ anticipates serving 400 to 600 students during the four-year grant period. The first two FUSE certificate programs will be launched as early as the end of 2026. The certificate programs will be stackable, with a pathway allowing students to apply their FUSE credentials toward 91��Ƭ bachelor’s degrees. FUSE students will also have access to academic support, such as onboarding, academic coaching, digital literacy support, tutoring and other wraparound services.

Among the students FUSE will target are adult, rural and under-resourced learners, who will make up at least 40% of enrollment. The program will use flexible, hybrid evening and weekend scheduling to reduce barriers faced by working adults and caregivers. FUSE will also set specific performance targets, including ensuring that 80% of students complete their program, 75% obtain credentials and 70% find job placement within six months of graduation.

“This work is only possible because of 91��Ƭ's strong partnerships,” Hein said. “Together with business, industry and community leaders we are creating opportunities that meet real needs and open doors for learners across our region.”

Situation

Felker Brothers Corporation, a century-old industrial manufacturer, faced a common challenge in mature industries—how to innovate in a field where technology evolves slowly. By 2017, the company recognized it was stuck in a rut, with new ideas rarely progressing beyond management discussions. Seeking a structured path forward, Felker Brothers partnered with the University of Wisconsin-Stout Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC) to transform its innovation process.

Solution

With the MOC’s guidance, Felker Brothers established a formalized system for evaluating and implementing new ideas. Central to this transformation was the creation of a Product and Process Development Committee. This group, composed of high-potential employees, reviews submitted ideas, conducts research, and evaluates return on investment before passing proposals to a Risk Management Committee. This committee then assigns tasks and oversees execution.

Results

46 concept cards submitted and reviewed by the Risk Management Committee
- 12 were denied
- 34 advanced to various stages
Since adopting the new system, Felker Brothers has successfully completed approximately 20 projects, including process improvements, equipment upgrades, and personnel changes.

Situation:

Upon joining Sanmina Corporation, Plant Manager Gary Freiberg identified a critical need for employee development. After assessing organizational needs and gathering feedback, it became clear that the company lacked structured training and leadership development. This gap was contributing to high turnover, low morale, and underperformance. Drawing on previous successful experiences, Freiberg reached out to the 91��Ƭ Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC) to implement the Training Within Industry (TWI) Job Relations (JR) and Job Instruction (JI) programs to rapidly enhance supervisory skills and leadership capabilities.

Exodus Global, a leading manufacturer of mobile shears and attachments based in Superior, Wisconsin, found itself at a critical juncture in its growth. With expanding manufacturing space, new equipment, and rising sales, the company recognized the need to improve workflow efficiency and enhance workforce education. To address these challenges, Exodus Global partnered with the 91��Ƭ Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC) to implement a Value Stream Mapping (VSM) initiative.

Solutions

Rather than tackling the entire organization at once, Exodus Global and MOC facilitators Nick Ford and Matt Wakefield focused on a specific area of operations. A cross-functional team was assembled to participate in the VSM process. Together, they physically mapped and walked through each step of the workflow to identify inefficiencies and sources of waste. Once these areas were pinpointed, the team worked collaboratively to reduce or eliminate them. Situation

Exodus Global reached a pivotal point in its growth. With expanding manufacturing space, new equipment, and increasing sales, the leadership team recognized the need for a structured approach to operational efficiency. They chose to implement a 5S program, beginning with their Shear Assembly shop.

Solutions

A cross-functional team of 10 employees was assembled to lead the initiative. During the Sort phase of 5S program, the team identified and removed over 70 unnecessary items, reclaiming approximately 200 square feet of valuable production space. The Set in Order phase followed, resulting in a more organized and efficient work environment.

Results

The results were both quantitative and qualitative:

Sales increased by 8.6%, generating an additional $369,000 in revenue.
Productivity improved by 20%, with a 50% reduction in shipping errors.
Production time decreased by 30%, and customers experienced a 75% reduction in application time.
Training efficiency improved, with new employees reaching 75% of performance benchmarks in just two days and 100% in six.

Beyond metrics, the initiative fostered a culture of ownership. Employees took pride in maintaining a clean and organized workspace, leading to more balanced assembly times and reduced variation. The improvements positioned Exodus Global to scale operations more effectively as demand increases.

University’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence to provide support for small, medium manufacturers

A $647,000 grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) will allow University of Wisconsin-Stout’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence – CAM-AI – to provide advanced manufacturing and AI support to small- and medium-sized manufacturers.

The newly announced grant is the result of ongoing conversations and the preexisting relationship between the WEDC, the State of Wisconsin’s lead economic development agency, and 91��Ƭ, Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University.

“The WEDC financial commitment will allow 91��Ƭ to fully build out the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and AI,” 91��Ƭ Chancellor Katherine Frank said. “This investment will enable 91��Ƭ to expand its delivery of cutting-edge, industry-focused support and services to small- and medium-sized businesses throughout the state.”

91��Ƭ's Industrial Robotics & Machine Vision Lab, part of the Robert F. Cervenka School of Engineering, is one of the campus labs that will benefit from the WEDC investment.

“Wisconsin has long been a manufacturing powerhouse, especially in the field of precision manufacturing,” said Missy Hughes, secretary and CEO of WEDC. “For our state’s small- and medium-sized manufacturers to remain competitive in the global marketplace, it’s absolutely critical for them to be able to harness the power of AI in their daily operations. CAM-AI is in the spirit of the Wisconsin Idea – helping businesses and residents access the knowledge and resources of the Universities of Wisconsin to keep our state moving forward.”

Seth Hudson, 91��Ƭ’s executive director for Corporate Relations and Economic Engagement, said the funding will allow the university to invest in state-of-the-art equipment to expand and enhance the services of CAM-AI. “This investment will allow us to further contribute to the growth of our industry partners through advanced manufacturing techniques and AI-driven solutions,” he said.

Next gen manufacturing: New CAM-AI will leverage resources to support industry in Wisconsin

Small and midsize manufacturers in Wisconsin and Minnesota have a new resource — and ally — in their quest for growth and success.

David Ding, director of the Robert F. Cervenka School of Engineering and an associate dean in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Management, said the grant will allow 91��Ƭ to fully build out an Automated Demonstration line, enabling the university to showcase to its industry partners the applications of automation, robotics, vision inspection and AI-aided manufacturing. “The demonstration system will showcase the new technologies that CAM-AI can help manufacturers implement in their own processes,” Ding said.

CAM-AI was created in 2024 to leverage the broad array of university expertise for solving technical issues and conducting research to support private industry. The center works in partnership with the 91��Ƭ Manufacturing Outreach Center, one of two centers in Wisconsin affiliated with the National Institute of Standards and Technology/Manufacturing Extension Partnership national network. The Manufacturing Outreach Center, which also receives support from the WEDC, delivers comprehensive, proven solutions through consulting, training and workforce development.

Once fully operational, the WEDC investment will allow CAM-AI to serve approximately 20 companies and 100-plus students each year.

The goals of 91��Ƭ’s CAM-AI include:

Partnering with the Manufacturing Outreach Center to provide timely academic applied research expertise.
Providing direct assistance in solving time-sensitive industry focused problems.
Providing services, such as additive manufacturing and testing.
Engaging with regional and statewide initiatives that support advanced manufacturing and AI.

“By leveraging the expertise of our faculty, students and advanced technologies as the state’s polytechnic university, we are able deliver timely and impactful solutions to meet the evolving needs of industry partners,” Hudson said.

Manufacturing is one of the largest components of Wisconsin’s economy: With more than 9,000 manufacturing companies employing 480,000 workers statewide, the sector is responsible for $66 billion in economic activity annually, according to the most recent annual report from the Wisconsin Center for Manufacturing & Productivity.

MLS Develops Confidence in Leadership Skills for Dental Crafters Network dalkaa March 19, 2025

Situation

The Dental Crafters Network was experiencing organizational growth. Individual performers were engaged and competent as high performing technicians, and now were tasked with leading others. Leadership knowledge and skill development was essential for the next generation of leaders in the organization.

Solutions

The company was seeking a resource that brings leadership fundamentals to nurture the emerging leaders, a program that brings real experiences of leading in manufacturing. The Manufacturing Leadership Series (MLS) - Tier 1 provides a foundation for developing leadership skills where the focus is on people. The delivery structure is in 4-hour blocks, once a week for 6 weeks, at the client’s facility, The 10 participants were engaged in classroom and one on one development, engaging an applied learning format with facilitators. The Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC) staff observed consistent methods, as the participants grew and gained confidence. The MLS trainng was set up to develop and apply scenarios from real world manufacturing knowledge to apply the skill sets needed.

Results

Culture: The company has identified an improvement of 10 % (MLQ) with leadership effectiveness, employee satisfaction and performance beyond expectations. The MLS Leadership Development Series created an understanding (knowledge) and skills to effectively lead people where things are happening. It has created confidence within the leadership group and engaged the team.
Time: Meaningful reviews coming from leadership saved time when processed, no rework/rewrites of goal setting and expectations.
Sustainability: Continued strong sales/profitability in a fast moving market sector
