Every initiative like this is part of a larger strategic plan that represents our goals, is aligned with our mission, and demonstrates our responsibility to the future,” Frank said.</span></p><p><span>As </span><a href="/about-us/our-polytechnic-advantage" target="_blank"><span>Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University</span></a><span>, 91Ƭ prepares students for the future, Frank said, adding that, “At Stout, education encompasses what happens both inside and outside of the classroom, studio, and laboratory. This means that our campus infrastructure should reflect our values as a polytechnic university: forward-thinking, applicable, and engaged with the issues of our time.”</span></p><p><span>Guenard agreed. “These new electric vehicle charging stations are more than a convenience – they’re a clear sign of our institution’s evolving role in addressing climate change and promoting environmental responsibility. We’re not just talking about sustainability – we’re building it into the physical landscape of our college.</span></p><p><span>“Sustainability is a shared effort. It’s championed by students who speak up for cleaner systems. It’s maintained by operations teams who innovate behind the scenes. And the campuswide compost and recycling collection system results in a 48% decrease in landfill waste.</span></p><p><span>Last fall, 91Ƭ hosted the&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.wisconsin.edu/capital-planning/sustainability/" target="_blank"><span><strong>Universities of Wisconsin&nbsp;Sustainability Annual Meeting</strong></span></a><span>, where sustainability leaders, faculty, staff, students, alumni and external partners&nbsp;gathered to collaborate on environmental topics and share&nbsp;resources, ideas and knowledge to develop strategic goals and support sustainability efforts on UW campuses, as well as career and economic development across the state.</span></p><p><span>Earth Week events, coordinated through the Sustainability Office and various student organizations, including UW-Sprout Campus Garden volunteer day and apple tree planting, thrift swap, plant sale, campus cleanup and an Earth Day Bash at the University Library.</span></p><p><span>More than 80 off-campus students participated in this year’s Spring Move-Out event, when the Sustainability Office, Waste Reduction Work Group, and campus volunteers helped to properly dispose and recycle approximately 360 items, including furniture, bed frames, grills, electronics and appliances. The office also worked with Chippewa Valley Habitat for Humanity to donate items in good condition. This was possible due to our students' investments in Stout's sustainability efforts, our faculty who incorporate sustainability in their curriculum and applied research, and our staff who plan, implement and practice sustainability at the university on a daily basis,” said Erik Guenard,&nbsp;vice chancellor for Business, Finance and Administrative Services.</span></p><p><span>In Wisconsin, 91Ƭ was the only university to be recognized in 2024.</span></p><p><span>91Ƭ has addressed sustainability in every aspect of operations. The latest such&nbsp;</span><a href="/about-us/news-center/uw-stouts-largest-solar-panel-array-date-installed-boosting-campus-sustainability"><span>project in 2023</span></a><span> will reduce emissions by 1,431 metric tons annually.</span></p><p><span>“As a member of the 91Ƭ community since 2005, I have seen 91Ƭ’s commitment to sustainability grow stronger each year through cross-disciplinary applied projects and expanded internal and external partnerships; sustainability has become core to our polytechnic work,” said Glendalí Rodríguez, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.</span></p><p><span>“It is exciting to have the opportunity to celebrate these accomplishments, and as the university wraps up its 10-year long-range plan, we continue to prioritize sustainability into the future,” Rodriguez added.</span></p><p><span>In early April, 91Ƭ also received a&nbsp;</span><a href="https://focusonenergy.com/news/2024-energy-efficiency-excellence-awards"><span>Focus on Energy statewide Energy Efficiency Excellence Award</span></a><span>. 91Ƭ was nominated by Xcel Energy, which partners in the award with other state utilities. Price Commons is more than tripling its ability to tap the sun to partially power the building.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Thanks to $150,000 in student Green Fees, 122 solar panels and infrastructure were recently added on top of Price Commons, joining the 32 panels on the building since 2017. The new panels generate 400 watts each compared with 330 for the original panels. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>With the new panels, enough energy will be generated on average per day equivalent to the electricity needed to power six average- to large-size homes. It’s clean, renewable, doesn’t pollute the air, and — once you have panels to capture it — it’s free.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“With this installation giving us a total of 59.6 kilowatts in solar panels, we’re now able to provide 8% of Price Commons electricity from solar,” Rykal added. “When we eventually add solar to the whole rooftop, we’ll be close to 40% of the building’s energy. It is an energy-intensive building with a large commercial kitchen.” </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Price Commons houses the main University Dining facility.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The new approximately 3-foot by 5-foot panels were installed May 10-13 by </span><a href="https://eaglepointsolar.com/"><span>Eagle Point Solar</span></a><span> of Davenport, Iowa. Payback on the cost is expected in about 15 years, Witucki said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“Sustainable energy is important to our students,” Witucki said. “They have the long view and know we have a lot of big challenges. They are doing their part to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.”</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>91Ƭ is&nbsp;a Charter Signatory of the&nbsp;</span><a href="http://secondnature.org/" target="_blank"><span>Carbon Commitment</span></a><span>, a higher education&nbsp;effort&nbsp;to address climate change by committing the campus to neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In signing the Carbon Commitment, 91Ƭ committed to accelerating&nbsp;sustainability research and education.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Later this year, a kiosk is planned in Price Commons to show students live updates of the energy generated by the solar panels and the equivalent in trees planted by reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The Green Fees this year helped prepare the building infrastructure for panels in the future, Rykal said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Wisconsin gets about 42% of its electricity from coal. But the state has about 20 solar farms under development that will generate more than 2.2 gigawatts of power, or about 7% of the state’s annual electricity use, according to </span><a href="https://www.wpr.org/wisconsin-witnessing-rapid-transition-solar-energy"><span>Wisconsin Public Radio.</span></a></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>New solar installations nationwide are expected to&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.seia.org/research-resources/solar-market-insight-report-2020-q4" target="_blank"><span>increase 43%</span></a><span>&nbsp;from 2019 to a record 19 gigawatts of capacity installed in 2020, according to projections from the Solar Energy Industries Association. Nine signs around campus recognize the achievement.</span></p><p><span>The league recognizes universities, businesses and communities with platinum, gold, silver, or bronze designations. The city of Menomonie was designated a bronze level in 2014 and again in 2018.</span></p><p><span>Applicants are graded on infrastructure, programs, education and support for bicyclists. Thirty-eight schools earned or renewed the award in 2020, according to a recent &nbsp;announcement from the League of American Bicyclists. Amidst the pandemic, we are grateful that these 38 institutions see the benefits of being a Bicycle Friendly University to the well-being and health of their students, staff and faculty,”</span></p><p><span>Nesper stated. “These colleges and universities are leading by example, building healthy environments where people can safely and easily get around by bike, thereby improving the well-being of their community by enabling access to sustainable transportation options.”&nbsp;</span></p><p><span><strong>Healthy, zero-carbon transportation</strong></span></p><p><span>Stout Adventures Coordinator Sam Carney, who oversees the StoutBikes program that started in 2010 and provides rental bikes for students, said biking is important for students and community residents.</span></p><p><span>“It is a zero-carbon form of transportation,” Carney said. “It’s good for one’s health and it’s less costly than vehicles. Early advocates organized and petitioned Congress to pave the first roads to increase the accessibility and safety of bicycling.</span></p><p><span>Today, the League promotes a more bicycle friendly America through advocacy, education and raising awareness of bicycling and its benefits.</span></p><p><span>“The applications from colleges and universities in 2020 demonstrate the myriad challenges educational institutions have and are overcoming to serve the needs of their students and employees,” stated Bicycle Friendly America Director Amelia Neptune. “What’s clear is that bicycling is part of the solution many colleges and universities are using to better the campus life of their communities. There the wood, steel, fabric, cotton and foam were separated.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The wood, depending on the type, is either made into mulch, energy fuel, animal bedding or wood chips. The steel inner spring can be melted and poured into new steel products such as nuts and screws. The cotton and foam are sold to companies that use the materials for insulation and foam padding underneath wall-to-wall carpets and in other cushioning applications.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><img alt="Justin Fults" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="16380353-bb44-44a1-95c3-abb947b13b86" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/Justin_Fultsweb.jpg" style="padding:0px 30px 0px 0px" class="align-left" width="150" height="221">“The company reuses almost all of the mattress,” said Justin Fults, 91Ƭ’s associate director of facilities operation at University Housing. “It’s important to University Housing that we try to be sustainable as possible and reduce our carbon footprint.”</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>According to LRP Recycling’s website, recycling 900 dorm mattresses would save about 44,100 pounds and 11,400 square feet of waste from going into a landfill. LRP Recycling also works with hotels and military bases to recycle mattresses and furniture, as well as furniture at schools.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>In addition to a greener solution, using LRP ended up being nearly one-quarter the cost, Fults said. Recycling cost about $2,200, mainly to have the mattresses transported. Sending the mattresses to the landfill would have cost about $10,000 in tipping fees, or about $15 per mattress. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Residence hall mattresses are replaced regularly, Fults said. About 3,000 students live in the halls. Universities provide weekly reports about their recycling rates, with champions in various divisions crowned at the end.</span></p><p><span>Since 2014, 91Ƭ has been the leader among UW System schools that compete. 91Ƭ’s combined recycling and composting rate is about 50 percent, meaning it prevents as much waste going to landfills as it sends to them.</span></p><p><span>“We are always excited to compete in Recyclemania because it brings to light how reducing our waste is integral to making our campus more sustainable,” said Sarah Rykal, 91Ƭ sustainability director.</span></p><p><span>“Recyclemania helps us to affirm all the great work we’re doing to divert waste from the landfill, and it pushes us to reduce even more waste as a campus. For information on renting the lockers, go to the </span><a href="/life-stout/sustainability/transportation/bike"><span>Stout Sustainability bike page</span></a><span>.</span></p><img src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/bikelockers_metaadams1a.jpg" data-entity-uuid="7525f541-9217-4810-8827-bd2526f85671" data-entity-type="file" alt="Student Meta Adams uses one of the new campus bike lockers." class="align-center" width="900" height="791"><p>&nbsp;</p><p><span>“We’ve seen an uptick in people biking in the winter to campus,” said Sarah Rykal, 91Ƭ sustainability director. “We wanted a place for people to be able to park their bikes when it rains and snows. This is a pilot project. Because we are a Bicycle Friendly University, we wanted to have more infrastructure for bikes.”</span></p><p><span>In 2016 the League of American Bicyclists named 91Ƭ a Bike Friendly University for promoting and providing a more bikeable campus for students, staff and visitors. The university also offers bike fix-it stations equipped with the tools needed to get bikes back on the road.</span></p><p><span>The new lockers cost $50 a year. Also, a three-sided bike shelter near them was installed in 2015 to promote the use of alternative transportation on campus. The shelter holds about a dozen bikes.</span></p><p><span>This past summer, the </span><a href="/life-stout/sustainability/transportation/bike"><span>StoutBikes</span></a><span> program added 22 new bikes purchased through student Green Fees, including helmets, lights and locks. The bikes are available for rental at a cost of $50 per year, $30 per semester or $10 per weekend. Rentals are offered through Stout Adventures.
